reply... pregnancy and anemia
first of all i want to clear you one point it is not so serious as u r getting worried ok.. i give u some details...
low production of blood is a vague/common man word for anemia... and anemia is a vast vast topic .. there are so many causes of it...
in pakistan we have mostly nutritional defeciency anemia and 95% its iron defeciency anemia rest nutritional defeciency is vitamin B12 defeciency....
eat beans , meat ,drink milk , green leafy vegetables like spinach , salad leaves and pulses(daal).... dates , apple etc...
but still there are other types of anemia ... isuggest following tests be done..
blood tests... (even 5-10ml blood is enough to do all tests)
complete blood count(CBC......TLC,DLC,Platelet)
haemoglobin level... normal range in females upto 13.5g/dl... but 10.5g/dl is fine for pregnancy
peripheral blood smear(blood cells are seen under microscope)
reticulocyte count(new red cell production rate)
HB electrophoresis(bit expensive but may be done for thalassemia)
iron level in serum, serum ferritin and total iron binding capacity
coagulation profile PT,APTT,INR
okey the underlying cause will be detected..
she would not be having platelet problem other wise would have be needing blood transfusion especially after and during menses...
plus the condition in which all the cell production decreases is aplastic anemia andshe cannot have it otherwise the person is in severe state..
it is just that her haemoglobin is less most probably and she has just told u this as common people take it as that low blood production...and some girls are very happy that we are smart and weak so anemic..
why i say investigations
better to know underlying cause...
plus if she has thalassemia minor in which patient has no problem at all but anemia be there...should not marry another thalassemia minor preferrably as chances of babies to be thalassemia major increases..then you can go for your tests..
but dont get so stressed out okey...
anemia and pregnancy:
if severe anemis that is below 7.5g/dl problem in conception can occur
but if less severe even then you know pregnancy itself is a bit or more anemic state..baby takes iron etc...
so chances of miscarriage may increase or baby growth decreased or early delivery etc... but this all is for Hb less than 8.5g/dl
