Ulcerative Colitis: The longer a person has UC, the higher the risk of colon cancer. Generally, the risk increases after a patient has sufferd from UC for approximatley 8-10 years, and the risk continues to increase with subsequent years. Another very important consideration is what is the extent of the colon involvement. People who only have rectum involved with ulcerative colitis have very small risk of developing colon cancer, versus people who have pan colitis( entire colon involved with ulcerative colitis) which will increase the risk of colon cancer significantly. My question for you is how long ago were you diagnosed and what is the extent of the colon involvement, and how often do you undergo colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy?
Regarding imuran, studies done on mice have shown that imuran may cause temporary suppression of spermatogenesis in mice, but these studies have not yielded the same results in humans, so I guess that's good news for you.
Please know , as you may already do, that UC is a chronic condition, with relapses (flare ups) and remissions( temporary reduction in the symptoms). Educating yourself about your illness will help you become more prepared for relapses, and will also diminish your feelings of helplessness and powerlessness over your illness.
As far as marriage is concerned, I do not see any reason why you should not marry. However it would be a good thing if your future spouse has a good understanding of your illness, so that she knows what to expect, and that she could understand that there would be times in the future when you will have relapses so that she is better prepared to help you rather than become frustrated with the chronic nature of your illness.
My prayers and best wishes for you. |

Surgery For Ulcerative Colitis:
Surgery is generally the definitive treatment of UC, however it is used as a last resort, when medical treatmnet fails or if there are complications. However, surgery is associated with significant changes in the lifestyle of a person subsequent to the surgery, and not all patients are good candidates for this surgery. |

Cancer Risk In Ulcerative Colitis:
Risk of cancer in UC is increased once someone has had the disease for atleast 8-10 years or so. If your disease is limited to lower left colon, the risk is smaller as compared to if you had pan colitis ( entire colon involved).
I understand your anxiety about your health. For your peace of mind, you can talk to your doctor about doing screening tests for cancer. |
